Your loads, your system

How Much to Be Independent?

Tick and adjust to match your life — the last two lines give you the price of your independence.

Daily load
2.2 kWh/day
Profile: 🛖 Tiny Cabin
PV array: ~1.4 kWp → 3 × 450 W
Battery: ~5 kWh LFP
To be independent: ~$3,800 USD
Per year: ~$150 USD

Assumptions: winter-realistic yield ≈ 1.8 kWh/day per installed kWp (sized for the short months — see “The December Problem” below), ≈ 1.5 days of battery autonomy, equipment-only May 2026 prices interpolated from the three profiles below. “To be independent” is that one-time hardware cost; “Per year” is the battery-replacement fund (LFP set aside over ~12 years) — the sun charges free, so there is no monthly bill. Sized for a northern winter — in sunnier latitudes the same array yields two to three times more, so these numbers are the safe worst case anywhere on Earth. A starting estimate, not a quote — get a real load audit before you buy.

The honest arithmetic

How Much Power?

UseDaily drawNotes
Refrigerator1.0–1.5 kWhModern inverter compressor — the old garage fridge eats triple
Chest freezer0.8–1.2 kWhA full freezer holds its cold better than an empty one
LED lighting0.3–0.6 kWhThe whole house — the bulb war is over, the LED won
Laptops & electronics0.5–0.8 kWhTwo laptops, the router, the phones
Big TV~0.4 kWh (2 h)Screen size is a power rating in disguise
Gaming tower~0.7 kWh (1 h)And the screen follows the tower — one more TV hour
Satellite internet1.0–1.5 kWhThe dish is always listening — and heats itself in snow
Well pump0.5–1.2 kWh~1 kWh lifts a whole day of water — the litres are on the Water page
Irrigation pump0.3–0.6 kWh, summerDrip lines at dawn — the garden drinks while the sun climbs
UV water treatment0.2–0.4 kWhAn always-on lamp between the cistern and the tap
Washing machine0.4–0.7 kWh / load, coldThe dryer is the trap — the clothesline is a 0 kWh dryer
Microwave0.2–0.4 kWhBig watts, short minutes — the minutes win
Local AI server0.7–1.2 kWhYour memory, offline — a Jetson-class box sips, a GPU tower gulps
Electric cooking1.0–2.0 kWhInduction — and propane is the classic off-grid dodge
Electric water heater2.5–4.0 kWhTwo short showers — the biggest resistive load in the house
Fans0.3–0.6 kWhHot nights for pennies — the A/C's honest little brother
Small split A/C3–6 kWh, hot monthDaily average — an inverter unit modulates instead of slamming
Electric fence~0.1 kWhThe cheapest guardian on the Animals page
Workshop1–2 kWh (~1 h)Saw, drill, compressor — short bursts, big peaks: mind the inverter surge
E-bike charging0.4–0.6 kWh50 km of range per charge — the cheapest vehicle on the land
Heat pump8–16 kWh, annual avgCold climate — "The December Problem" below, in a single line
EV charging~8 kWh (40 km/day)A small house's worth of demand parked in the driveway
Phantom standby rule+0.2–0.5 kWhChargers, clocks, standby LEDs — one switchable power bar kills the vampires
December rule1 kWp ≈ 1.8 kWh/daySize for the darkest month — the calculator above is built on it

The calculator's three default ticks — fridge, LED lights, laptops — are the honest 2.2 kWh minimum: a Tiny Cabin. Add the well pump, the washing machine, electric cooking and the local AI server and you land at ≈ 5.9 kWh/day — about 3.6 kWp of panels, ~9 kWh of battery, ~$9,900. Still barely half the Small Off-Grid House card below.

Reading the table: efficiency is panel-level (how much sunlight is converted). 21–22 % is excellent for residential. Power (W) is "STC" — laboratory peak. Real-world output is 70–85 % of that. Higher wattage panels = fewer panels for the same kW system, lower per-watt installation cost, but heavier and harder to handle alone. Prices vary widely; buy in pallets when possible.

LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) is the standard for residential storage in 2026: longer cycle life (5 000–10 000), tolerates 100 % depth of discharge, fire-safe, no cobalt. NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) is denser but ages faster and carries higher fire risk under abuse — common in EVs, less ideal for stationary home use. For a sanctuary, choose LFP.

Honest math before you buy

The December Problem

Typical monthly output of a fixed solar array in a northern climate (~47° N), in kWh per installed kWp. July ≈ 145, December ≈ 40 — the same array produces 3–4× less in the dead of winter. That's the number the brochures never show.

📐 Oversize the array

Size your array for November, not July. Summer surplus costs nothing; a winter deficit is paid for in generator hours.

🔌 The generator

A few dozen hours a year is all it takes: it covers the two grey weeks that even a big array can't save.

🔥 Wood for heat

Never heat with solar electricity in January. Wood or propane carries the thermal load — solar carries everything else.

Three Sanctuary Sizes

🛖

1–2 kWh/day · weekend & summer
~$2,600 USD
🏡
Full Autonomy + Electric Heat
30–50 kWh/day · cold climate, heat pump, EV
~$55,500 USD

Prices reflect equipment only, May 2026. US-dollar figures are shown first; for non-US manufacturers, the approximate price in the brand's home currency is shown in parentheses. Add ≈ 30–60 % for installation, racking, wiring, permits, and an electrician for inspection. Always price-check at the moment of purchase — solar prices fell roughly 20 % between 2024 and 2026 and continue to drift down.

heavier local inference
150–450 W3.6–10.82–5 panels + ~10 kWh of battery to get through the night

The console at the top of this page already lists it as just another load: “local AI server — your memory, offline”. It is the most important number on this page: a single 450 W panel produces more than 1 kWh per day on average, even in a northern climate — enough to run your memory 24/7, year-round.

Energy autonomy and local memory are the same project: nothing that is yours should depend on a server you don't control. Discover the local memory →

The other sources

Wind & Micro-Hydro

🌬️

Small wind

The honest disappointment

On paper, a wind turbine completes solar — wind blows at night and in winter. In practice, small residential wind almost always disappoints: below a 10 m mast the wind is turbulent and weak, real output rarely matches the brochure, and the moving parts freeze, wear out and demand maintenance. Real exceptions: coastline, wide open plain, a tall mast. On a wooded lot, put that money into more panels and battery instead.

💧

Micro-hydro

The quiet jackpot

If the land has a stream with year-round flow and drop, micro-hydro is the best off-grid source there is: it produces 24 hours a day, at night and in December alike. Even a steady 500 W = 12 kWh per day — as much as the entire small-house profile above. A Pelton or turgo turbine and its penstock often cost less than a big battery bank.

A year-round stream is not a romantic detail — it's a purchase criterion. See the LAND Buy page →

💡 Know a solar panel, battery, or inverter brand we should add? Share it on the Ideas page or mention @LOAM_token on X.

The grid was a 20th-century miracle. The 21st-century miracle is that you don't need it. With panels, batteries, and a quiet inverter humming in a closet, a small piece of land can run its own life forever — as long as the sun keeps rising.

Energy is the breath of the sanctuary.
